Sutton Trust Workshop – Widening Participation through SABRE

SABRE team members recently put together a workshop for the Sutton Trust, a widening participation organisation whose sole aim is to improve social mobility.

In total, 20 students were selected for an Engineering Summer School at the University of Bristol. These students were aged between 16 and 17 years old and met key eligibility criteria such as attending a state school, being the first in their family to attend University or living in a neighborhood with a low ate of progression to higher education.

The workshop included an introduction to aeronautics and the research challenges that academics are currently investigating. This included a SABRE overview with an introduction of the key technologies. This was then followed by a design and build activity involving an airfoil which was then tested for stiffness, strength and drag. The students found the workshop engaging and enjoyable and left interested to learn more about aerospace.
